The W in Careers

Perhaps one of the biggest things I don’t like about sending “please hire me” material to companies is the impersonal feel of the package. You shine your shoes, put your best foot forward, and show that you’re the best one out there…but you may never actually meet them. Though I understand why it can’t be done, I’d rather talk face-to-face with people than send them a snapshot of my abilities in an first-class envelope.

That said, I sent my reel out to a major studio this week. I plan to be much more proactive about getting my DVD into the hands of those that I wish to work for, and will of course be updating this accordingly when I have news I can share about that progress. Until then (brace yourself) it’s just watch and wait without worry of what will work out or what I’ll wear while listening to whispered words of wisdom as to whether west or east I should go!

To wrap up that whirling windstorm of W’s, here’s the latest cut of my demo reel on YouTube. I love getting feedback on this stuff, so speak up if you have any comments or otherwise! (Though wailing will not be tolerated – remember we wistfully wish only for whispers within these walls.)

On a slightly less grammatically-challenging note, I found out the other day that the college I work for is getting a new president. Well, that is to say that the old one is leaving…not sure about a new one yet. Could make things a bit interesting for a department that is basically the “cutting edge digital art” side of the institution (just for you, social thread) and I’m not sure what we’ll be creating since a lot of our current workload was based off of a concept the president handed down to us directly.

At any rate I’m actually looking forward to seeing how things work out, though the way in which they-that-will-not-be-named left is somewhat of an interesting tale in itself. Lots of stuff going on behind the scenes, and frankly that’s probably a good thing! (Here’s your check, see you around.) Sure this is common practice in the corporate world, but might be hitting the bottle a wee bit hard, don’t ya think?
